On her first visit to Spain as Executive Director of UN Women, Michelle Bachelet visited UNWTO headquarters in Madrid to strengthen collaboration between the two UN bodies in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in the tourism sector.
9 June 2011 UNWTO Algarve Forum sets a consensus for tourism strategies
While tourism has enormous potential to contribute to development, it can only do so with adequate governance systems which empower people and communities – this was one of the main messages emerging from the UNWTO Algarve Forum (1-3 June, Vilamoura, Portugal). The Forum – intended to bridge theory and practice in tourism as an instrument for development and good governance – convened over 300 representatives from the private and public sector who were joined by prestigious academics to conclude several months of on-line discussion and establish a consensus on tourism strategies for the next decade and beyond.
2 June 2011 Central and Eastern European countries join forces for sustainable tourism development in the Carpathian Mountains
The seven Central and Eastern European countries sharing the Carpathian mountain range have agreed to jointly manage the sustainable development of tourism; a sector of fundamental importance to the region. Meeting at the 3rd Conference of the Parties to the Carpathian Convention, the countries adopted the Protocol on Sustainable Tourism, drafted by UNWTO and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), which lays the foundations for a coordinated approach to tourism (Bratislava, Slovakia, 25-27 May).

The President of Hungary, Pál Schmitt, is among the first European heads of state to join the ongoing World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Leaders for Tourism Campaign.
13 May 2011 UN agencies commit to make tourism work for development
Tourism is one of the top three sources of export earnings for nearly half of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and is a priority sector for their further integration in the global economy. The contribution  of tourism in advancing development was addressed during a Special Event on Tourism for Sustainable Development and Poverty Reduction organized by the recently created UN Steering Committee on Tourism for Development (SCTD), during a major UN conference on LDCs (Istanbul, Turkey, 10 May 2011).
11 May 2011 International Tourism: First results of 2011 confirm consolidation of growth
International tourist arrivals grew by close to 5% during the first months of 2011, consolidating the 7% rebound registered in 2010. According to the April Interim Update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, growth was positive in all world (sub)regions during January and February 2011, with the exception of the Middle East and North Africa. South America and South Asia led growth (both at +15%), followed by Subsaharan Africa (+13%) and Central and Eastern Europe (+12%).
9 May 2011 UNWTO announces 2011 Ulysses Prize and Awards winners
A travel tool designed to promote accessible tourism in Quebec, Canada and a discovery trail of the ancient Moche civilization of Northern Peru are among the winners of this year’s UNWTO Ulysses Awards. The awards ceremony will be held during the Gala Dinner of the ‘UNWTO Algarve Forum on Tourism and Science: Bridging theory and practice’ (1-3 June 2011) in Vilamoura, Portugal.

31 March 2011 UNWTO congress to debate the future of snow and mountain tourism
Mountain resort professionals, from the Alps to the Rockies, as well as Asian destinations including  the Republic of  Korea, will debate how snow and mountain destinations can respond to current and future challenges, while remaining competitive and sustainable, at the 7th World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism (Grenoble, France, 15th -16th September 2011).
